Speaker: Dr Jane Alsweiler
Neonatal hypoglycaemia is common and associated with long-term neurodevelopmental impairment. Babies born preterm; small or large for gestational age, or to mothers with diabetes in pregnancy are at risk of low blood glucose concentrations, as are extremely preterm babies treated with insulin for neonatal hyperglycaemia. Treatment strategies to reduce the incidence of neonatal hypoglycaemia will be discussed including prophylactic oral dextrose gel which has recently been shown to reduce the incidence of neonatal hypoglycaemia in at-risk babies.
